What does Losar mean?
Lhosar is defined as Lho means Year or Age & Sar means New. Therefore, Lhosar denotes New Year or starting of New Era.
Sonam Losar is celebrated by Tamang. They celebrated their new year on the first day of the new moon or in other words the very next day after the no moon day of the month of Magh (Magh Sukla Pratipada).
This year Sonam Losar is on Magh 19, 2078/ February 02, 2022, Saturday. This year is the 2856th year of Tamang’s New Year celebration. Lhosar starts on the first day of the first month and the Tibetan calendar is made up of twelve lunar months. But the celebration day may be on different days in different Tibeto-Burman communities.
