Lakhan Thapa is known as the first martyr of Nepal. He was one of the first prominent resistors to the rule of the Rana dynasty.

Lakhan Thapa was born in Gorkha. Lakhan Thapa was hanged in Manakamana temple. The primary motto of Lakhan Thapa was to kill Jung Bahadur Rana. Dhir Shamsher played an important role in imprisoning Lakhan Thapa. 6 people were hung with Lakhan Thapa.

Every year Martyr's day is celebrated on Magh 16. Martyr's week is Magh 10-16.

Shahid Gate is a monument to the martyrs in Kathmandu. It is customary for Prime Ministers and other officials to visit the monument after taking oaths of office.

4 Martyrs of Nepal


1. Shukraraj Shastri

Shukraraj Shastri was born in 1950 B.S. The name of the book written by Shukraraj Shastri is Palace of heaven (Swarga ko Durbar). Shukraraj Shastri was imprisoned 6 years.

After the imprisonment Hang till death was the punishment given to Shukraraj Shastri. Shukraraj Shastri was hung in 10th Magh, 1997 B.S. in Teku, Pachali. Shukraraj Shastri was the first martyr among the 4 martyrs in 1997 B.S.

2. Dharma Bhakta Mathema

Dharma Bhakta Mathema was born 1965 B.S. The job of Dharma Bhakta Mathema was Body Building Instructor. Dharma Bhakta Mathema was hung in 12th Magh, 1997 B.S. in Shifal. Dharma Bhakta Mathema was the first martyr among the 4 martyrs in 1997 B.S.

3. Gangalal Shrestha

Gangalal born was born on 1975 B.S Ramechhap. Gangalal Shrestha was involved Mahabir Institute.

Gangalal Shrestha was shot dead on 14th Magh, 1997 B.S. at the age of 22 years. Gangalal Shrestha was shot dead on Shova Bhagwati. Gangalal Shrestha was the youngest martyr of Nepal.

4. Dashrath Chand

Dashrath Chand was born in 1960 B.S in Baitadi district. Under Tanka Prasad Acharya leadership Dashrath Chand worked during the revolution for democracy in 2007. 

Dashrath Chand was shot dead on 14th Magh, 1997 B.S. Dashrath Chand was shot dead in Sova Bhagawati with Dashrath Chand.
